Botox & Fillers Q&A

What is Botox, and how does it work?

Botox is the world’s most popular temporary treatment for:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines

Botox is an excellent way to achieve a more youthful, well-rested appearance without the recovery time of plastic surgery.

Botox is from a natural substance called Clostridium botulinum. In certain concentrations, this substance is highly toxic, but the volume used in Botox is carefully controlled and perfectly safe. Botox has been in use in medical applications for more than 50 years and has nearly 20 years of clinical research in aesthetic applications.

Treatment requires a series of injections, which are swift and painless. You may feel a slight pinch as the needle enters your skin, but there is no significant discomfort. Results begin to develop within 24-48 hours and last for four months.

Botox works by preventing targeted facial muscles from moving through their full range of motion. You can still make normal facial expressions, but your skin won’t be pulled and tugged into lines, folds, and wrinkles.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers enhance volume in the deeper layers of your skin. They work to smooth and soften wrinkles and other signs of aging. There are many dermal fillers to choose from, most of which have formulas containing a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally in your skin.

Dr. Antell determines the areas where you need additional facial volume, and then selects the right filler for the job. Some formulations are thicker than others and better suited for specific applications.

Some of the areas fillers address include:

  • Lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • Lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin
  • Crow’s feet
  • Beneath the eyes
  • Cheeks, or mid-face area

There are even dermal fillers that can plump lips or smooth tiny wrinkles around the mouth. Results can last from a few months to more than a year, depending on the filler used.

What is a liquid facelift with Botox and fillers?

A liquid facelift describes a combination of Botox and fillers. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, these treatments can deliver impressive results without plastic surgery.

Knowing which formulations to use and the exact volume is a skill, one that providers refine over years of practice. The process begins with a thorough examination and a discussion of your treatment goals. That allows your practitioner to create a customized plan for a successful liquid facelift using Botox and fillers.
