Breast Reduction Q&A
Why do women choose breast reduction?
Each woman has a unique set of motivating factors that support a decision to move forward with breast reduction. For some, large breasts have always been troublesome, making it difficult to stay active or feel confident in clothing. Others have problems like back, shoulder, or neck pain that stem from the pull of bra straps.
Some women feel their breasts are not aligned with the rest of their body and lack proper proportion. Heavy or dense breast tissue can also make it more difficult to detect the early signs of breast cancer, which is a concern for women at a higher genetic risk.
The decision to move forward with breast reduction is personal. No one factor is any more or less valid than another. Antell Plastic Surgery is here to support women in their choices and to deliver safe and beautiful results.
What happens during breast reduction surgery?
The breast reduction process begins with a planning stage. Dr. Antell discusses your desired breast size and shape, explains the process, and goes over what to expect during recovery.
On the day of your procedure, you receive medication to eliminate sensation and allow you to sleep through the procedure. Your surgeon marks your breasts to guide the incision lines, then begins by making incisions to access the underlying tissue.
They remove excess tissue, and when they achieve the desired size, they trim the skin and re-drape it over the new breast contouring. In most cases, your nipple requires repositioning to align with your smaller breast shape.
Dr. Antell closes the incisions, taking care to create as little visible scarring as possible. They carefully bandage your chest and wrap it in a special garment to protect your incisions during the first days of healing.
Is recovery difficult after breast reduction?
You experience a degree of swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the days after your breast reduction surgery. You may have surgical drains placed to help remove excess fluids. You do have prescription medication to address lingering discomfort.
You need someone to drive you home after your procedure. It’s a good idea to have some help around the house for the first few days. You have limitations on how high you can raise your arms, and you won’t be able to lift heavy objects for several weeks.
As your body moves through the healing process, you begin to see the results of your breast reduction. Most women who have breast reduction are so pleased with their results they wish they had moved forward with the decision years earlier.
